It can be challenging to figure out your career path, especially when you are just about to graduate high school. Even those in university or college might still need to figure out what to do for their career or at least their initial jobs. However, by taking the time to reflect on what you’re interested in, what you are currently skilled at, and what jobs are in-demand, you can narrow down your options for what jobs or career paths you wish to pursue.
A Career Path You’re Interested In
Think about the things that you have an interest in. It could be writing, pursuing a leadership role, etc. Think about what kind of jobs use those skills that you’re interested in, and try applying for jobs that fit at least some of those interests. That way, if you get the job, you have a job that you somewhat enjoy doing and is something that you won’t be bored by quickly.
An example of this could be that you are interested in woodworking and are relatively skilled in this craft. You can look for jobs involving woodworking so that you can learn more about it and do work in that familiar area. Examples of these jobs include woodworking technicians, landscape carpenters, and cabinet installers.
An In-Demand Career Path
There are often specific jobs or jobs in an in-demand area. If you’re unsure what to do, consider honing your skills for careers in demand to increase your chances of employment. Maybe they’ll end up being jobs that you enjoy doing!
One example of an in-demand job is the healthcare system. With the pandemic ongoing, there is still a need for more healthcare workers due to its effects on those affected by the pandemic in various ways. Taking care of older people in areas such as retirement homes is also an ongoing need since they may need assistance to do tasks or chores that they cannot do themselves.
Other examples of in-demand jobs or career areas are IT jobs or technical-related jobs. You can learn skills better suited for those areas, such as technical writing and other tech-related jobs like web development, software development, or becoming a technician.
Careers You Can Do
Are there any skills you’ve picked up during your life so far that people can pay for? For example, you might have skills such as using data management systems for related jobs like data entry, data analysis, and marketing analyst.
Manual labour, such as shovelling and repairs, are also good opportunities. These are less seemingly glamorous than being an office assistant. Still, they are skills that people will pay for, especially since there is always a need for new buildings being built, objects or devices like heaters to be fixed, and snow to be shovelled for others that cannot physically do so themselves.
Though it can be challenging to figure out what career path is right for you, considering what is in demand, what you are interested in, and what you can currently do are helpful tools to narrow your options. You might also find something that you enjoy doing in the process!
