“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” —Henry Miller
If you stand by this mantra and feel eager to expose others to the wonderful world of the open road, exploring Tour Manager jobs might prove to be the perfect fit for you.
Educational tours are an amazing way to expose students to new things, new ideas and a new way of thinking at an early age. Whether it be two-week trip to Europe or a three-day escape to Montreal, exploring new places challenges and inspires people to keep discovering more.
There are a ton of people involved in the planning and delivery of these types of tours. From selling the tour to ensuring there are enough forks for every student at each meal, there are many hands working toward the same goal.
Tour Managers are the primary source of information for teachers and educators during the tour planning process. Not only are they responsible for ensuring a smooth planning and departure process to all tour groups, but they are also responsible for reselling services to these clients. Thus, their two driving goals are customer satisfaction and loyalty.
Don’t forget, Tour Manager jobs are also sales jobs, so Tour Managers are sometimes required to meet sales quotas, and part of their compensation may come from commission or bonuses.
Those with Tour Manager jobs are creative and positive people with exceptional communication skills. They work well in a fast-paced environment, are deadline-driven and work with a sense of urgency.
The majority of a Tour Manager’s day is spent making telephone calls and responding to emails. Whether it be guiding a Group Leader through the enrollment process, providing information for someone considering a tour, or confirming what services are offered by certain suppliers, their to-do list is never-ending.
However, all of these things work toward the overall objective of educating students and offering them further insight into the world. If this is something that matters to you (and if your WPM is something to be marvelled at), your days will fly by!
Just like in Back To The Future: “Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.” Touring allows students to think outside the box (and think beyond the road), which is an extremely valuable experience to have.
Perhaps we don’t need roads, but we do need Tour Managers!
