TalentEgg hosted a seminar at Ryerson University’s Ted Rogers School of Management on Mar. 24, 2010, to give first-year retail management students the opportunity to interact with recruiting managers from some of Canada’s top retail employers.
On hand to answer students’ questions were June Doyle-MacLean, Manager of National Field Recruiting for Reitmans (Canada) Ltd., Erin Marsden, Group Recruiting Manager for Entreprise, and Kristen MacLellan, Regional Recruitment Manager at Starbucks Coffee Canada.
What opportunities does your organization offer students and recent grads?
Erin from Enterprise says:
- Enterprise is one of North America’s largest recruiters of students and recent grads
- Almost 100% of Enterprise employees start in the company’s management training program
June from Reitmans says:
- Reitmans (Canada) Ltd. owns and operates about a thousand stores across Canada
- The positions which are the most available to students tend to be sales associate roles
- Reitmans encourages students to consider the part-time positions first to “get their feet wet” with the company
Kristen from Starbucks says:
- Starbucks isn’t just about the retail stores—there have non-store roles as well
- With support offices all across Canada, the opportunities are endless
- Starbucks hires for positions in HR, marketing and finance, among other areas
With thousands of applicants per posting, what really makes a candidate stand out?
- With online applications becoming so popular, it’s important to show you possess the core competencies required for the position you’re applying for
- Take the time to make contact with the employer, whether by phone or in person, to show you have attention to detail and really want the position you’re applying for
- The key is to make the best first impression and do that with your resumé, cover letter and application to help get your foot in the door
